Budoka of the Year –  Senshi Ryu Do

My first experience in Martial Arts was in 1983 in the art of Judo, whilst living in the Solomon Islands, I was traveling around a lot in which I experienced many styles.

When I finally moved to Queensland, I studied Scorpion Karate, Praying Mantis Kung Fu and Zen Do Kai under Dai Sempai Alex Boyd (Wrecking Crew Stable) Karate and Mauy Thai. My work dictated that I relocate to Ipswich, during this period I trained into the Security Industry, which allowed me to work in Nightclubs, Pubs and Concerts. As you can imagine, this was a huge change from my trade as an Air Conditioning Technician. Whilst in Ipswich I started training in Taido Kenpo and started assisting in teaching Kick Boxing, as I gained knowledge through the ranks, I found my self taking a different path gaining confidence and a deeper understanding for the Arts.

I successfully completed a Certificate 3 in Security and other Technical training in other fields (Mechanic), I’ve recently completed final testing for entrance into Queensland Police Service and hope to be available for the next intake at the Academy. Working in Security gave me opportunities to use what I had been taught, beyond the physical sense by using my mind and patience to control situations before they escalated.

This learning lead me to meeting my lovely wife (Naomi).

During my training in Taido Kenpo I have had the honour and privilege of training with some great people who have become good friends. I wish to thank Grand Master Braff, whom I have completed my San Ryu Do Instructors certificate, he officially recognised my abilities as a Provisional 4th Dan in San Ryu Do and as a General Promotion.

Other great instructors that have shared their wisdom and kindness are, Kaicho Mal Lomax, Hanshi Tino Ceberano and Renshi Brad Koopmans. I wish to acknowledge all the Instructors whom have given me a great honour in allowing me to train with them over the years, above all I am deeply honoured to have my students who want to come to my dojo to continue their learning and help me become a better instructor every week .

When the student becomes the teacher, they become the student again“.
