Sensei John Buckley was born in 1942. During his long career in Judo he has amassed a remarkable resume which stands for itself.

Coaching Highlights

During my period of coaching, Granville came to be acknowledged as one of the strongest men’s clubs in the Country. Players achieved representative honours at State, National and International levels, including World Championships and Olympic Games.

One club member placed 5th in the 70Kg category in the 1976 Olympics. Another gained Bronze medals in the 52Kg category in the 1982 and 1984 Women’s World Championships.
The club was awarded “Best Men’s Club” by the JFANSW in 1975 and 1977.

As a member of the Technical Board of the Judo Federation of Australia, I had significant input to the initial implementation of the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme within Judo.
Coached numerous athletes to international representative level. Results include State, National and Oceania champions and medallists.

Personal coach to member of Athens Olympic team.

Led JFA elite scholarship holders on training tours Japan and Europe 2005, 2006

Sports Administration

Served for many years on the Board of Management of the JFANSW, and on the State Technical Panel (Black Belt Register)  Past- President, Judo Federation of Australia (NSW) Inc.
Held position of  State Technical Director, responsible for arranging training programs for players at all levels, gradings, advising and  recommending on team selections.

Managed Australian Men’s Team to inaugural Pacific Rim Championships, Hawaii, 1980.

Oceania Representative on International Judo Federation Sport Commission, in which capacity attended and participated in the organisation and conduct of the Men’s and Women’s World Championships in 1981,1982, 1984, 1985 and 1986.

Technical Operations Manager – Judo SOCOG  August 1998 to October 2000. Responsible for technical organisation and operations of the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
