Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading authorities on martial arts education, Shihan Barry Johnston is truly the ‘trainer’s trainer’. As an author, lecturer, martial artist and instructor he is recognised by professionals nation wide.

Barry has over 20 years of professional martial arts teaching experience and holds a 6th Dan in the art of Karate and has earned the title Shihan. As a fitness industry instructor and personal trainer Barry also enjoys delivering fitness programs to clients of all ages from all walks of life. As a lecturer he has over 10 years of TAFE (Tertiary and Further Education) experience and is the author of the nationally recognised curriculum for martial arts to music and curriculum for Australia’s first government recognised units of competence for the martial arts industry. Also included are various other educational manuals for the fitness, martial arts and security industry.

Barry frequently conducts lectures and workshops on exercise physiology, strength training, sport coaching and legal and ethical responsibilities throughout Australia. Barry is also an Executive Director on the board of ‘Sports Health Check PL ‘, a company co-directed by some of Australia’s leading sports personalities and administrators, fast becoming Australia’s leading organisation in community health and fitness delivery.

Barry, via his company the International College of Kenshusei has extensive experience in sports coach training for the swimming, martial arts, Australian Football and Golfing industries. He has also provided program consulting for athletics and secondary school Physical Education programs.

His counsel and input are sought across many industries, currently serving on the advisory board for the International Budo Federation (Aust), Barry has extensive cross training experience in the fitness, personal training, martial arts coaching, sport coaching and security industries. As a first aid and sports trainer instructor, Barry also co-ordinates most of the emergency response training for the various industries served under his scope as a registered training organisation.

A full time gymnasium and martial arts school owner of 20 years, Barry is no stranger to hands on instructing and coaching. Himself a national representative in 1981 in Jakarta for the South Pacific Kyokushin, full contact karate championships, he has gained extensive experience training at world championship level as well as training his own students to the same levels.

Today,  Barry takes pleasure in training clients of all ages in the art of traditional Karate, as well as helping many fitness clients achieve their personal goals. His registered training organisation, the International College of Kenshusei, has now grown to a level in which is now delivering education for the martial arts industry internationally. A person who enjoys fitness activities of all kinds, Barry is an avid exercise enthusiast. A martial artist, martial arts to music enthusiast, weight trainer, scuba diver, wind surfer and cross country skier. Barry lives near bush land area of Bendigo, Central Victoria, Australia, with his wife and two children. He cross trains with his wife and children, both children of which are also 1st degree black belts in the art of traditional karate.
