Instructor of the Year – Taekwondo New Zealand

Inducted into the W.K.U.H.O.F. for 2012
Instructor of the Year – Taekwondo New Zealand

My training has been between Christchurch and Dunedin over the last 35 years depending on work postings.

  • 1975 I started Judo at Cobberkwai Judo Club (Christchurch) under Stan Taylor.
  • 1977 I moved to Dunedin and joined the Kyokushin Kai Karate Club at the Dunedin YMCA, with instructors Murray McKay and Lindsay Parry. I also trained on alternate nights at the Nakajima Judo Club with Bill Hart. The judo gave me the opportunity to compete in competitions that weren’t as frequent in Karate.
  • 1980 I moved back to Christchurch where I met and trained with NZTF Taekwondo instructor Chris Moyle and Ken Gemmell from Kempo Bushido Ryu. I enjoyed the classical style of Kempo and in contrast the chance to yet again compete in tournaments (Taekwondo).
  • 1981 I joined the Army and trained with Sam Hokianga in WTF Taekwondo along with numerous soldiers who had returned from Singapore after training in ITF Taekwondo.
  • 1986 I opened the Warrington TKD Club in Dunedin.
  • 1988 Promoted to 1st Dan Black Belt in TKD (Kukkiwon certificate shows 1989 due to NZTF delay) by Grand Master Jung Nam Lee.
  • 1989 Elected to senior instructor for Dunedin District TKD (Warrington, Mosgiel and Port Chalmers) voted NZ TKD Fed Instructor of the year.
  • 1990 I became a certified instructor and referee in the NZ TKD Federation.
  • 1992 Selected to be Manager/Trainer for the NZ team competing in the 10th Asian TKD champs in Malaysia. We gained two bronze medals (two of my students attended in a team of ten competitors).
  • 1993 I opened the Christchurch Olympic TKD Club
  • 1996 The club became incorporated and joined the Taekwondo Union of NZ, I was voted onto the TUNZ executive as a regional delegate.
  • 1994-1999 I organized thousands of hours of fundraising activities along with a core group of Club members and friends to raise the capital needed to purchase and renovate the new dojang for Christchurch Taekwondo. This is now the TUNZ National Training Centre.
  • 2003   – Voted TUNZ Vice President

– TUNZ nationals I coached 21 fighters to 20 Gold Medals and one bronze medal.

– I coached two Christchurch Olympic athletes to the World Champs selection and inclusion.

  • 2005 Along with Matt Ransom and Yorick Neal I helped form the new TKDNZ and obtained the National Governing Body recognition from the World Taekwondo Federation and the NZ Olympic Committee (NZOC).
  • I was granted the privilege of conducting Kukkiwon Dan gradings on behalf of TNZ and Grand Master Kim.
  • 2006   – I attended and passed the WTF International Referees Course (Sydney, Australia)

– Awarded prestigious Kukkiwon diploma by WTF representatives Great Grand Master Hae Man Park (10th Dan) and Grandmaster Kim (8th dan)

– Transferred to Timaru and coached the Timaru TKD tournament classes.

2009   – 6th Dan Promotion.

  • 2010   I returned to Christchurch where I was involved in forming the Canterbury Taekwondo Academy
  • Elected TUNZ President
  • 2011 Inducted into the NZ Martial Arts Hall of Fame

This is a brief overview of my Martial Arts background to date. I have been actively involved since 1975 in tournaments and seminars (nationally and internationally) at all levels. I have trained in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.

I have had the privilege to train and coach numerous students to success from regional to international tournaments including World and Asian Champs with excellent results both in experience and medal tallies.

It is fantastic to see students achieve their individual goals. Being a part of this equation is great.
